They Were Better Off Together

While doing the regular web surfing, I stumbled across this new X-Men book Wolverine and the X-men. In this new title, Wolverine and Cyclops have finally got into a fight with each other about how one should lead. Who won the fight is basically unclear (I'm guessing Wolverine) but the two parted ways and Wolverine took whoever wanted to go with him to build a new school in Manchester, NY. Since this is the 2nd issue, it is opening day and the school is still in development but going through inspections from the NY Board of Education. Of course, what is a story arc without a little chaos. The school is ambushed by the newly formed Hellfire Club made up of homicidal homicidal teenagers. Silly right? Well as this arc seems to go on, it gets even sillier. From the beginning of the issue, the reader is shown a flash back of a discussion between Wolverine and Ice-Man. This foreshadows an action-sequence that later takes place within the book as the school is overrun by mini-Nightcrawlers, sentient ground, and frankenstein soldiers that shoot out of a ray-gun...yes, Frankenstein soldiers that shoot out of a ray-gun.
Since Wolverine is such a serious, "cool", and over-used character, I am assuming that writer Chris Aaron is trying to introduce some humor to contrast with his image. Although comedy is what Aaron is going for, it later comes across as kind of cheesy and a parody of itself. The one redeeming quality is legendary artist Bachalo's graffiti style art. Some parts of the book are hard to make out, especially the action scenes but overall it is still interesting to look at.
