Live n in Living Color Part Tre

With another round of videos hittin the internet and tv screen, I dedicate another post to the wonderful world of the music video. However, wanted to do something a little different and jampack as much videos (old and new) that i might have missed over the brief hiatus. So without further delay, sit back, relax, grab some Cheeto's or Dorito's, and enjoy the visuals...

"Lights Down Low"-Bei Maejor
Bei Maejor has set out to prove that not only can he sing and produce but he can also rap. With his club-hit single "Lights Down Low" ft Waka Flocka, he even sets out to prove that he has just as much swag as the rappers. The video is pretty basic with everything that would appeal to the hip-hop community(jerseys, basketball, drinks, partying, and pretty girls) but with an addictively catchy track you dont need a stunning visual.

Lil Scrappy-"helicopter"
After a brief hiatus, Lil Scrappy returns with a new single "Helicopter" ft. 2 Chainz, Rolls Royce Rizzy, and Twista. The video isnt too visually stunning but matches the song by actually adding in "helicopters". The song is classic Scrappy and may not be his comeback but it is good to hear something from the southern emcee.

"Take it to the Head"-Dj Khaled
Trapped in a subway station and about to drown with the massive amounts of water flowing in? Then Party! You've got plenty of hot model chicks around you but no bottles...take it to the head! With Dj Khaled's "Take it to the Head" ft Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj visual, he draws inspiration from the infamous Universal Studios ride and show the best of creative and destroyed settings. One thing that I found a little interesting for a song about drinking, there is the absolute absence of any bottles.

ANTHM-"Manhattan"
Ethiopian-American rapper hailing from NY may be new to the scene but has the potential to be one of the newest greats to hit the music world. With his new visual for "Manhattan", he keeps it simple but classy with a rags to riches in reverse approach to living in Manhattan and struggles of making it through a slight addiction to the bottle. The video is simple but creative in its approach. For an unsign emcee, I can see why he has the heavy on-line following. I remain a fan.

Melanie Fiona-"Watch Me Work"
Melanie Fiona's sophomore album MF Life has been receiving nothing but good reviews but commercially hasn't lived up to the hype. With her latest visual for track "Watch Me Work", she focuses on empowering her audience with a collage of strong and powerful woman over the decades. Although not one of my favorite tracks and least likely to become a major hit, this feminist PSA is creatively put together but takes too much away from the song. This seems more suited for something to display in the background while on tour but it still is a dope mix of the strong and beautiful.

"U Did That (Remix)" Teairra Mari ft 2 Chainz
After listening to the first release of Teairra Mari's "comeback" track "U Did That", I had a feeling that it was yet to be mastered. With the addition of 2 Chainz, she adds that gritty, masculine perspective to contrast with her sexy, sultry voice. Although the track has potential to be a banger, the over-the-top approach from the beautiful songstress just comes across as trying to hard to appear sexual. What kills me is that she is already beautiful and sexy, the term "less is more" should have come across loud and clear during the direction of this video. Besides that, the concept and look is very basic and falls short to  make the song interesting. This video just leaves you wanting more but just from a different source.

"The Woman You Love"-Ashanti ft Busta Rhymes
Although it has been over 8 months and Ashanti's comeback single has yet to hit the charts, she has released a visual for the track "The Woman You Love". The song is actually one of her stronger efforts but the visual doesn't exactly capture the intensity or the sense of the single. Not exactly sure what she is trying to portray with this video. Is she a futuristic alien singer from space that is reflecting on her relationship on Earth or is she just an angry futuristic witch tired of being constantly played? Either way she is looking good and hope this single, at least, gets more radio play for her. Maybe a re-up on the video and better promotion might help.

"Pop A Rubberband"-Travis Porter
There comes a time in every rapper's career when they take the high road and make the coveted "stripper" video. With Travis Porter's new single "Pop a Rubberband", they took notes from rappers of the past for a BET Uncut(if still around) worthy stripper anthem video. Nothing much to discuss or review, the strippers look right and the shaking of the gluteus maximus is plenty. Damn shame that these girls think this video will put them on, God bless America.

Kevin McCall-"Naked"
West Coast producer, rapper, and ex Chris Brown entourage member Kevin McCall drops a visual for his promo single "Naked" ft Big Sean. The video is pretty stylish and is filled with plenty of ladies with strategically placed hands and arms over their naked bodies. With a little cameo from Brown, McCall hopes to appeal to a wide audience and take over the club with this track. Although the video is well done, the single is overproduced and generic.

Nelly Furtado-"Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)"
Nelly is back with a new dance track "Big Hoops (bigger the better)". Recently releasing the visual, she displays the obvious big hoops but adds a few extra BIG elements. Walking on stilts, growing 10 stories high, and throwing in some Native American tribal dancing, Furtado mixes her imagery from "Like a Bird" to more current Hip-Hop influences. The video isn't something that I would call visually stunning but the addition of the tribal dancing and use of color is something I haven't seen before from her and I like it.

"Amazing"-David Banner ft Chris Brown
Not exactly sure when David Banner became a more creative and diverse Southern rapper, but his latest visual for his new single "Amazing" ft Chris Brown is a mix between MJ's "Leave Me alone" and a elementary school kids class project. The imagery is filled with paper cut-outs and dolls that would make Robot Chicken creators look sideways. With a little cameo from the MJ action figure, I am going to jump out on a limb and say that this is suppose to be a homage video but it falls short. I like that Banner is doing something different but it definitely looks like he spent about $50 on this visual.

Kanye West-"Lost in the World"
Although this Ruth Hogben directed video is a year late considering that "Lost in the World" came out in 2010, this Kanye West visual is one of his best. The visually stunning effect of the separating buildings are only amplified by the black and white tones and precise cinematography. I really liked this video and only hoped that it was released earlier, so that more people would actually care to watch and comment on it. Say what ever you want about Mr. West, but you cant deny that he has a talent for finding visually stunning and audio mesmerizing art.

"Let's Go" Calvin Harris ft. Ne-yo
Dance music has always had international appeal. From Asia to the West Coast, the electronic sounds of great DJ's like Calvin Harris can be heard throughout any club. With his latest visual for the single "Let's Go" ft Ne-Yo, director Vincent Haycock capitalizes on the concept that music is international. There isn't any lip synching to the track but more of couples from different areas of the world enjoying different hobbies and Calvin Harris' parties. Ne-Yo makes a little cameo in the video as well. Although the song is beginning to grow on me, the video is something that I have seen before.

"Wildfire"-SBTRKT
SBTRKT track "Wildfire" has become strangely addictive to me, as of late. Although their visual for the hit track was released over a year ago, I felt the need to share it with you because it is just that odd but appealing. The Sam Pilling directed video did not make much sense to me at first and just confused the hell outta me as I tried to figure out why the female star was convulsing and sweating in the bed. It wasnt until I read some of the comments from the youtube page that I realized that Pilling took inspiration from a Korean superstition that if you fall asleep with the fan on, you will die from dehydrating. Hmm. Well regardless of the superstition, the effects are pretty interesting and dope and the song is just as mesmerizing as the song.

Review Tuesday: Not Your Average Album

Paving the way for great bands like Evanescence, Garbage was one of the most influential female led rock bands of the 90s and 2000s. Their first two albums and arguably their best, launched Garbage into critical and mainstream success. With lead vocals from Scottish singer Shirley Manson and gritty digital rock production from fellow Wisconsin native bandmates Duke Erikson (bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion), Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards) and Butch Vig (drums, percussion, and producer for Nirvana's Nevermind, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, and Green Day) made them one of the world's most successful groups. However a niche for perfection and label trouble contributed to their watered down sound on later albums and break-up. After a 7 year hiatus, the band has reunited and hopes to recapture the sound and success of their first two albums with their recent effort Not Your Kind of People.
Staying consistant with almost otherworldy guitar effects and riffs while mixing electro rock with grunge and Manson's iconic voice, Not your kind of people is a solid effort. Although Garbage still find themselves falling into that rock-pop category with almost machine-like persfection that industry has pushed them into before with their opening trrack "Automatic Systematic Habitat", the album soon changes to a more psycholdelic and electro-rock vibe with tracks "Big Bright World" and "Felt". The lead single "Blood for Poppies" takes the listener on a tale of a soldier in Afghanistan over a sick guitar riff and Eastern vibe. The rest of the album follows more of the rock vibe with lead singer Manson's dreamy yet eerie voice narrating a somewhat hallucinagenic musical trip.
With Not Your Kind of People, Garbage returns to the more gritty and rock inspored sound that found them success with previous albums but dont stray too far into experimentation of current electro-rock or alternative rock pop. It took me awhile to get to this review for various reasons but one reason is that this album took some time to grow on me. It is mainly a album for the orginial hardcore fans with some songs that may appeal to a new generation but above all is a confirmation that Garbage has not let the hiatus change them for worse.

Freshly signed Def Jam artist Jhene Aiko recently leaked a new chill unfinished track titled "2 seconds". Although the smooth produced by K.Roosevelt blends well with the soulful voice of Aiko, the lyrical content couldn't be farther from the vibe. Aiko claims she is 2 seconds from flipping on her insecure and annoying boyfriend, but still remains to keep it cool while harmonizing over the beat. I have been a fan of her for awhile now and she is definitely a up and coming singer with some soul but it would be good to hear more versatility from the rising star. A lot of her songs tend to have the same chill, soulful vibe with dope and real lyrics so it would be interesting to see her try out a different sound or production.

Rap legend 8Ball breaks away from MJG with a new solo effort and drops his promo single "Good Girl Bad Girl" earlier this week. The Memphis emcee enlists the help from an unknown producer for this bass/beat heavy track about finding that one bad jank with the qualities of both good and bad in one. This is a classic southern rap track and a banger. Nothing new about this type of flow or sound but definitely a solid work from one of the most prominent rappers from the south.

Although I'm just getting onto newcomer ANTHM, I am quickly becoming a fan. With steady buzz over the blogs, he releases an early track off his EP Joy and Pain, titled "Polaris". This track is very creative, lyrically dope, sick beat, catchy, and has Blu deliver a sick 16 bar feature. The NY emcee may be new to the game but displays a maturity in rhyme and sound that the game has been missing for awhile. Appropiately titled "Polaris" after the Northern pole star and brightest in Ursa Minor, ANTHM delivered on this track and can see him being one of the biggest newcomers to rap.

Azealia Banks has been making a steady buzz on the music scene and has already been featured multiple times on the blog. Her mix of dope lyrics and intricate beats, make her tracks equally unique and addictive. With her latest leak "Jumanji" off her upcoming EP 1991. Ironically Jumanji was one of my favorite books and movie when I was kid and this heavy percussion track is playful and kiddy but still dope. There isnt a release date yet for her upcoming label debut mixape but I will make sure to keep yall posted when it drops.

Chief Keef reached worldwide success from his G.O.O.D. music remix to "I Don't Like" but the Chicago bred emcee recently leaked a new track titled "Understand Me'. This deep and emotionally driven single brings the rapper to a new level of sophistication. With lyrical content inspired by Webster and iambic pentamater flow that paints a vivid imagery...sike, just kidding. This track is borderline generic and waka flocka-esque. Nothing about this really stands out and the beat is bass heavy. Even the addition of Jeezy on the track, I was still a little disappointed. "Understand Me" is something you would definitely put on at a party and people go stupid while shaking their dreads but not a track to make you sit and reallly listen or think.

Comedian/rapper Childish Gambino took the chance to promote his music career further off the hit series Community fame. At times he can come across as just a comedian dropping punhc lines as he raps and other times he can get personal and speak more on a biographical tone. There have been a lot of mixed reviews over the blogs for the rapper and with this new track "We Aint Them", the negative reviews should be put to rest. He is definitely a good rapper and their is nothing wrong with dropping the generic "hard" track every now and then but I feel that his strength lies in rhymes that paint an image of who he is and how he came up. Not every rapper came from the streets and not every rapper was a hustler on the block with a baby mom and kids to feed, but that doesnt mean life still couldn't have been a strugglke that effected you psychologically. At times it is refreshing to hear life from a different view point and in today's industry where so many rappers are really frontin like actors, it is good to hear some real lyrics.

Mega producer, dj, and songwriter Diplo is one of the few American bred artists that is known internationally. Working with huge acts like MIA, Beyonce, Usher, and Santigold, he has consistently delivered addicting tracks over a wide range of genres. With his new song "Set if off", Diplo teams up with VT DJ group Lazerdisk Party Sex and delivers a hypnotic but low beat dance single off his upcoming EP Express Yourself.

Former 36 Mafia member Juicy J has taken a step away from the group focused more on his solo music career with the release of his mixtape and a newly leaked single "Bands A Make A Dance". In my opinion, there has got to be an art to being so ignorant and ratchet and like good vs evil, you cant have intelligent rap without the ignorant. The Southern emcee may not be as ignorant in real life, but his talent for making ratchet bangers is borderline genius level. This song is audio crack and anyone else who disagreneeds to loosen up and just take it for what it is-ignorance. If the people didnt enjoy it, then the clubs wouldnt play it and twerkers wouldnt twerk to it. Even the Academy recognized his musical talents when 36 Mafia won the Oscar for Best Original Score for "Hard Out Here for a Pimp". Like I said before, everybody needs a little ratchet in their life every now and then.
It seems that European singers have brought back the soul that many main stream artists have been missing. From Adele to Rita Ora, our neighbors overseas continue to deliver soulful songstress that are refreshing and calming to the ear. With the newly released Selah Sue's song titled "Raggamuffin", the quirky singer teams with J.Cole for the remix. A good fit for the lyrically dope emcee and a great blend of jazz and pop, the remix is a solid effort from the Belgian singer.

Brian Mcknight "If Ur ready to learn"

After leaking a sample of a creeper worthy anthem, Brian McKnight has released the full version of his latest work "ifUrReady2Learn". What some may consider a new theme song for the show How to Catch a Predator, McKnight hopes to achieve a new audience and fan base with this track. The "Back at One" singer made a suicidal musical and career move with this ill attempt at being "sexy" or "provaocative." Nothing scream mid-life crisis more than a well established, educated singer making ratchet music. The video for the single was released and quickly removed from youtube after the song leaked. If you thought the song was bad, you should have seen the video. I am not going to go into full detail because I don't have the patience, as I am laughing while I am typing, but I will say that the video included a classroom, some girls, informational videos, a vagina sock pocket, and a graduation ceremony complete with diplomas. The video can be seen on funnyordie.com

After making a song too funny and ratchet to not sample, Noreaga quickly capitalized on the Brian McKnight line by sampling "Let Me show you how the p___ y works" and making this newly leaked tracked.

Eric Benet returns from a brief hiatus and teams up with Lil Wayne on his newest track "Red Bone Girl". This uptempo, R&B single is filled with soul and could be a praising anthem for the lighter persuasion girls of the world. With Weezy on the track, it adds a younger, fresher vibe as it breaks down to a jerk dance friendly beat that blends well. Benet's choice to put Wayne on the track was reportedly a decision made after he found that Wayne was a fan of the singer while in prison. After some controversial remarks about dark skin woman in his previous works, Weezy's addition to a single dedicated to thick light skin women is only fitting.

"Like a G6" creators Far East Movement make another attempt at keeping the party going till you're blacked out drunk and bring carried off the floor with their new single "Dirty Bass". The track is appropiately heavy in bass and rolling The Stereotypes produced beat. The members arent winning any awards for sick rhymes but they definitely made the right decision on featuring Tyga for a liquid 16 flow that melts well with the beat. The track isnt as addictive as their previous mega-hit "Like a G6" but something you can listen to after a few drinks in the club or in your car while driving through the city admmiring the night life.

Usher seems to be on a string of releasing good music lately. After his R&B hit "Climax" steadily takes over the radio stations and climbs the charts, he released the club banger "Scream". Now with his new track "Lemme See" ft Rick Ross, he combines the smooth and sultry productions of Jim Jonsin to narrarate his game to that fiending female club head. This track has some ATL club influences and can be both a dance track or between the sheets soundtrack. With the addition of Rick Ross giving his own rendition of game with the lines  "...Chanel hoodie on, looking like Trayvon Martin / George Zimmerman don’t want it.The 458 Ferari, I park it on my lawn. I let her meet my tongue, she blow up like a bomb” Althought it may not be in the best taste considering that the trial is still pending, you cant deny that his flow on the track was a good look for the reigning champ of R&B.

Former Danity Kane starlet, Celebrity Apprentice contestant, and newly styled redhead Aubrey O'day is not a newcomer to the music scene. With two platinum albums behind her and two reality tv shows, she has managed to stay on the mainstream radar for a couple years now. Although O'day is more known for controversy, and a very appealing playboy spread, than her solo music career with two singles that have yet to hit the charts. She returns with a new single ironically titled "Wrecking Ball." This pop ballad is VERY light and radio friendly. It is well produced but comes across as very generic and lacks a clear style or personality that sets her apart from any other pop singer that is current now. I am not really a fan but for those younger and into string guitar over a synthesized beat will enjoy it.

After a male group of singers part ways for reasons unknown, it is very rare for any other singer but the lead singer to make it back on the charts with a solo effort. What makes harder for groups like Danity Kane is the fact that each girl had a distinct voice and sound that was shared throughout their tracks. What also makes it easier for these former members is that they were reality as well as music stars. Capitalizing on that, each member has gone on to pursue their own solo efforts. One former member that has been releasing music is D.Woods. She is back with a new club banger track "2 the Bottom". This is a headbanging, guitar ripped, hype track that is something new from the singer. With the right promotion and team behind her, she could creep up on those mc charts but only time will tell...

If you have been following the blog at all then you already know that I am a Big K.R.I.T. fan. He is one of the few emcees who can give raw sounds of dirty south clubs, real lyrics, or deliver a sophisticated flow that will actually make you think. With the leak of his unreleased track "I heard it All" from his mixtape "K.R.I.T. Wuz Here", he paints the picture of the struggling artists being led on to believe he was going to make it with little results. Bias aside and whether or not I knew who K.R.I.T was before this, the single is dope and the lyrics are emotional. He is a talented emcee and I can't wait till he makes it big because the South hasn't really seen emcees like this since Outkast or Little Brother.

I came across ANTHM while searching through DjBooth for new music. This Manhattan bred, Ethipian-American emcee is a new comer to the game but his flow is pretty nice. His freestyle over "Up!" caught my attention and his other sampled tracks "Run to" got me onto Youtube looking up more of his work. With his latest FREE download single "Life Imitates Art", he takes a new artistic take over this dark beat to paint a picture of his struggle breaking into the music industry. Although his voice does remind me a little of Cory Gunz, lyrically he has the potential to be a J.Cole on the lookout for this NY rapper.
"Run to"
"Life Imitates Art"

"Up!"
It is good to stay well rounded when it comes to music because, nowadays, genre lines are becoming even more blurred as artists are experimenting with new sounds and beats. I have always been a small fan of elcetronic and house but havent really paid it much attention until I started to experience the night life. One of the standout tracks is the electro dubstep fusion "Say My Name" by Peter Robinson. This is a gritty and fast pace track with a trance like element and smooth breakdown. It quickly became an instant audio addiction.

Coming from two very eccentric and gifted parents, you wouldnt expect the junior starlet to be anything else but a born star. Willow Smith made a name for herself with her hit single "Whip My Hair" and has been consistantly releasing new music since. Her latest track "Do It Like Me (RockStar)" is a table banging, guitar ripped anthem for her fans. The song isnt't as catchy or addictive as her first hit but the 11 year old is still a growing star.Although her style of late does seem a little mature and Rihanna inspired for her age, she still appears to be enjoying being a kid.

With a series of leaks, Kanye West and Chief Keef drop another new remix to the track "I Dont Like". After the 16 year old Chicago native received mad radio play in the Chicago area for "I Don't Like", Yeezy enlisted Jadakiss, Pusha T, and Big Sean to add some G.O.O.D. flow to it. Each rapper has their own unique style, but I would say that Sean is then this track. He isnt really known for making club bangers and this gritty, headbangin, Waka Flocka-esque track is certainly a "shake them dreads" track. Now Keef isn't the best emcee by no means and we may just see a cartooned version of him featured on a new video of "Shawt Bus Shawty", but he could have a summer club hit on his hands after G.O.O.D. music approval.

Whatever Wednesday: Santigold...Master of Make believe review

"While We Sleep in America, Our House is Burning Down"

Santigold, formerly Santogold, came onto the music scene as a solo artist in 2008. She was unique and her sound only reflected her eclectic and eccentric style. By mixing a variety of beats and sounds, her self titled debut album reached critical and commercial success. After a 4 year hiatus from the music world, Santigold is back with a slight name change and a new sophomore album titled Master of My Make-Believe. Re-uniting with great producers Switch and Diplo, this is a step away from the alternative style from her first LP to experiment with electronic, hip-hop, new wave, dubstep, and reggae fusion to deliver a mix of international beats and social commentary.
Opening with the Switch, Q-Tip, and Santigold produced track "GO!" ft Karen O, Gold infuses a military and almost revolutionary vibe about power and jealousy from others that comes with it. This militaristic style seems to resonate throughout the album, especially on her lead and powerful "Disparate Youth". She takes a lighter note on the pop influenced but seductive track "The Riot's Gone" and slows down the tempo on the guitar and percussion driven beat of "God From the Machine". With other influences from African beats on her second single "Big Mouth" and Middle Eastern rhythm fused with dubstep on "Fame" and mix of Asian chimes with some electronic rock on "The Keepers", it is apparent that Santigold is not afraid of exploring new sounds and styles. Many of the tracks are also heavily influenced by Jamaican reggae and dancehall with some strong Hip-Hop beats ("Look at These Hoes").
Even with this trip around the world in experimental sound on Master of My Make-Believe, Santigold is able to connect these eclectic personal styles with her almost magical and precise voice that captures the theme of each song. Regardless if each song is not an instant classic, she is truly an artist that is not afraid to take risks. With this sophomore release, she succeeds in not conforming to industry standards but create her own odd but relatable world of her imagination. Although I doubt this album will be as successful as her first effort, it still has a couple stand out singles and is a solid piece of work. I am excited to see what she may have to deliver in the next few years or so.

Review Tuesday: B.O.B. Strange Clouds

B.O.B. exploded onto the music scene in 2010 with his debut album release The Adventures of Bobby Ray and lead single "Nothing on You" ft Bruno Mars. From this album spawned a series of hits and features from B.O.B. and was one of the most successful crossover Hip-Hop/pop albums of the year. The Grand Hustle records emcee's passion and good ear for pop helped him become an instant superstar and later led to collaborations with a range of artists. He achieved what many newcomers to the mainstream music world set out to do and thats have a hit first record. With Strange Clouds he enlists a wide range of artists and producers to achieve the same success.
Reaching the level of stardom that B.O.B. has, you have more freedom to experiment and enlist talents like Ryan Tedder, Bei Maejor, Alex Da Kid, Lil Wayne, StarGate, Playboy Tre, Taylor Swift, Trey Songz, and others offer their skills to create an eclectic sound that exceeds the boundaries of only one genre of music. Opening with the narration talents of Morgan Freeman on "Bombs Away", B.O.B. addresses the critics and challenges of success while staying true to himself over the past few years. Still focusing on appealing to mainstream, Strange Clouds includes songs about smoking weed ("Strange Clouds" ft Lil Wayne), groupies ("Ray Bands"), and aggression ("Play for Keeps"). What saves many of these tracks from just being a generic single for the club is his exceptional lyrical flow. For those who do not believe that he can hold his own and has passion when on the mic should just listen to the tracks "Arena" ft Chris Brown and T.I. and  "Out of My Mind" ft Nicki Minaj.
The rest of the album takes a deeper and darker tone as the sound changes from just Hip-Hop/pop to a variety of alternative, rock, and some singing. With "So Hard to Breathe", he opens up over an alternative percussion heavy beat about his journey through fighting and achieving success/fame. This theme of vulnerability carries through the cross-over song "Both Of Us" ft Taylor Swift, the haunting "Just a sign" ft. Playboy Tre, percussion heavy "Chandelier", and R&B pop-friendly tracks "Castles". Although the Strange Clouds can take a serious turn at times, he still has a few upbeat feel-good tracks. With his second single off the album "So Good", he draws a little inspiration from his first super hit "Nothing On You". "Castles" ft Trey Songz celebrates the accomplishments of achieving his dreams.
With the dope lyrics and some of the best production fans have heard from the ATL emcee, Strange Clouds sets B.O.B. apart from most mainstream artists. His good ear for sound and raw emotion in his lyrics are some of the qualities that make Strange Clouds seem genuine while still keeping it appealing to a variety of listeners. Like Hip-Hop and rap culture, his sound has changed and evolved from his earlier days of "Haterz Everywhere I go". Now this album may not be for every fan of rap, especially those who keep 2 Chainz and Gucci on heavy rotation, but one thing I have noticed about B.O.B. is that he is not about that type of life at all. Instead of portraying the uber-masculine image that greats of the past have done and succeeded, B.O.B takes influences from popular genres to make a solid piece of work. Where other Hip-Hop artists try to cross over the genres and appeal to a mass audience, it can come across as lackluster and generic *cough* Nicki Minaj *cough*. At times Strange Clouds can come across a little too pop friendly, rappers have to eat and pop is still one of the highest selling genres of music and B.O.B. can deliver good music.

First Listen...Playlist

Although it is a couple days late, I've been busy, I wanted to give the followers some great new music that was recently released. So here it is for your listening enjoyment. First Listen Playlist for the boys and girls!

Nas "Daughters"
"Nah, the way mothers feel for they sons, how fathers feel for they daughters
When he date, he straight, chip off his own papa
When she date, we wait behind the door with the sawed off"
There has been a surge of rappers taking a positive outlook on fatherhood and making a track for their sons/daughters. Jay had "Glory" and now Nas has "Daughters", both songs tribute to the proud fathers of the world. This track has an old school appeal with the No I-D produced beat and still holds street credibility with Nas' lyrics. The soulful drum and sampled vocal connection of beat and rhymes make an honest and great single from his upcoming album Life is Good dropping July 17th.

Slaughterhouse "My Life" ft Cee-Lo
In most artist's career, they are faced with the decision to make a song for the radio or for the fans. With "My Life" ft Cee-Lo, Slaughterhouse stays true to delivering great lyrics while Cee-Lo's vocals (inspired from Corona's "Rhythm of the Night") make it catchy enough to get major radio play. This track is a pleasant surprise from the supergroup and great single from their upcoming Shady Records debut album due out on Jun 12th.
Wale" Slight Work" (remix)
Like the one kid that was last to be picked for sports during gym class, Wale must have been feeling sympathy for rappers Diddy, French Montana, and Mase because they are on the newly leaked remix to the track "Slight Work". I am not sure why they needed to remix this sleeper hit but this line-up is beyond random. Not just the addition of Diddy delivering one of his best ghostwritten flows but the return of Mase is what stood out the most on the track. I was pleasantly surprised though because he definitely did his thing. Not sure if the former pastor is making that comeback but was he really missed in the rap game?
Warren G "Party We will throw now" ft Nate Dogg and Game
After over 20 years into the game, Warren G brings back the sound of the West Coast party rap that he found success in on his new track "Party We will Throw Now!". With help from the deceased Nate Dogg and fellow west coast emcee Game, this laid-back track is classic Cali sound from back when I was a kid in the 90's. His lyrical flow is still the same and who can hate on a hook from Nate dogg? The track isn't his comeback hit but is a good effort from the rap veteran.
Gotye ft Kimbra "Somebody that you used to know" (tiesto remix)
Tiesto offers a spin on the roster of the vast remixes to the mega-hit "Somebody that I used to Know" by Gotye. What Tiesto accomplishes with this remix is that he is able to still keep the same chill vibe of the original while still sounding like it would be great at a live set once the beat drops after the first chorus. I am still obsessed with the original to replace with this remix but Tiesto made a nice effort to take the "break-up song" to the club.
Vado "What that Mouth do" + "Badman"
Bass and drum heavy beat driven track, "What that mouth do" is Vado's attempt to deliver a thirst thug club anthem. The track is aight. Vado isnt the best lyricist and the beat sounds a little generic, almost like a thrown away club song from Noreaga. With the other leaked track "Badman", Vado takes it to the streets to warn listeners that he "sees more dead people than a mortician". Well its a wonder how he managed to stay alive, he must really be a bad man or stays safe in the comfort of his home while watching the evening news. I am not sure but Vado is determined to keep it hard and street for the fans who love this type of rap. The chorus is catchy but I don't see either being a standout hit.

"Bad Man"
Brandy "Put It Down"ft Chris Brown
Joining the success from her hit "It all Belongs to Me", Brandy recruits Chris Brown to slow down the mood and make a bedroom anthem track "Put it Down". This is one of the few times that Brandy has taken advantage of her sex appeal on a track and it mixes well with the Bangladesh and Sean Garrett beat. Why Chris Brown decided to step onto the track and rap makes as much sense as Brandy's short lived career as the rapper BrandNu. Regardless of the choice, this track is a good fit for the songstress.

Idle Warship "Driving Me Insane"
The dynamic relationship between singer and rapper with a more alternative and experimental music vibe is what makes Idlewarship an interesting and creative group. With their new track "Driving me Insane", Idlewarship takes inspiration from metal rock while singer Res tries her hand at delivering a quick rhyme. I have been a fan of hers for awhile and this track shows off her vocal talents and Kweli's quick/witty rap compliments this song well. It is apparent that the two are just having fun with this track and it does seem a little underproduced.

Brandon Hines "Yes You are"
The Jermaine Dupri written and Bryan Cox produced ballad is a promo single for the newly signed R&B crooner Brandon Hines. On "Yes You Are", he declares his love for that one special girl in his life. Appropriately released on Valentine's Day, this is a solid track and a good effort for the industry new comer. This song will not be his stand-out hit to set him apart from the top heavy weight singers in the male R&B game, but it is a "cute" single that is a good attempt at making his females fans' fall further in love.
