Abrams + Spielberg = Super 8

This past summer of 2011, director Jeffrey Jacob Abrams (J.J. as we know him) teamed up with producer/ director extraordinaire Steven Spielberg to bring us Super 8, just released recently on DVD and blue-ray on November 22, 2011. Super 8 is a fast-paced science fiction/ action movie that has quickly become a favorite among most for 2011. Now, if you know anything about J.J. Abrams, with such recent films under his belt as Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Cloverfield and the hit tv series Lost, you know to expect a fast-paced movie with some suspense to keep you engaged. After getting a chance to catch this in theatres this past June in Imax, I can safely say Super 8 is a safe bet for a film. If you're not expecting a bunch of gore and doom, this movie is a good time and a great cinematic achievement.

Set in 1979, Super 8 takes place in a rural suburb and follows lead character Charles (Riley Griffiths) , a movie-obsessed teen, and best friend Joe (Joel Courtney) as he sets out to film a zombie movie on his Super 8 camera. While filming at night by a railroad track with his group of friends, an unexpected and mysterious crash of a U.S. military train nearly misses the teens and sends them fleeing back home. Following the crash strange events begin to occur. Car parts and power cables begin to go missing, and strange sightings begin to rattle their town. Now it is up to the curious crew of teens to unravel the mystery of the train crash and strange happenings all while avoiding the dangers of the possible government cover-up that ensues. All in all, this is a good movie any family can enjoy. Where Super 8 fails as just another 'hidden monster' movie, it succeeds as a period film that captures all the cheesy wonderfulness we've come to expect of 70's and 80's monster movies. Rent it for a good time. Buy it if you like the genre. Either way, Super 8 is worth the watch. Check out the original trailer below. And of course I had to throw in a little zombie movie I found on youtube. Hey, why not, right?
