Live n in Living Color part deux

With the recent lateness in updates, I dedicate this Whatever Wednesday to the recently released music and commercial vids that have sparked my attention. Continuing from a previous post, the videos of late have been a little more interesting and creative. Enjoy the new and some you may have missed.

Can she really do wrong?
For those of you who watched the Grammys this year (zzzz), you may have been lucky enough to catch the beautiful island songstress Rihanna grace the red carpet in a Scarface inspired Armani dress. Claiming that the two collaborated on her look for the night, Rihanna dropped a commercial/vid showcasing the new Armani line with her single "Skin" (appropriately) playing in the background. I know that this is not a music vid in the most literal sense but it is the closest to the real thing and I thought "Skin" was a slept on hit from the singers last album LOUD.

Something extra: Her spread in Elle

Sex aint better than love-trey songz
Stepping away from the self-proclaimed "inventor" of sex image, Songz is displaying a more mature sound and image with his latest leaks off his upcoming album dropping later this year. In his new single and video "Sex Ain't Better than Love", Songz gives two different points of view. One on side, you have the inventor working his charm and bagging as many Kim K and Amber Rose look a like broads he can but still lives a lonely life. On the other side, you have the R&B crooner Songz who is romancing only one female and seems fulfilled by the end of the video. I think the video is simple but fits the song and message perfectly. A well done job and a good R&B ballad from the VA native.

bassnectar vava voom ft Lupe Fiasco
I have only heard of Bassnectar from Dj's and random mixes, but I have never took a minute to sit down and listen to their music. With their latest track "Vava Voom", I took some time to actually see what Bassnectar was about and listening to Lupe spit over the heavy rock and techno blend. A little WARNING the visuals in this video are very random and bright (something not for the epileptic or those with a history of seizures).

j.lo-dance again ft Pitbull
Teaming up with Pitbull again, J.Lo drops a new club friendly track about...wait for it...dancing! and some love making, of course. J.Lo has definitely been working hard to keep her music career afloat and make that comeback and, with this video, she continues to shows the world that she still has it. The video has some cool effects with the orgy on the ceiling and the trailing light effect that makes you feel like your on E, but for the most part it just seems like a preview into her and her new boyfriend's foreplay with Pitbull thrown in just because he is on the song. I wasn't really feeling the song at first listen, but after watching this video I can say that I may just be feeling it after all. See what magic a stunning visual and J.Lo's booty can have on a critics opinion...

David guetta-alphabeat
David Guetta recently released a new visual for his track "Alphabeat" and the song and vid are both built on the same concept; vapid partying. There aren't really any dope visuals other than the tricked out smart car and the futuristic club scene. Other than those few details and some models, the video is basically kind of pointless. If this is how we party in the future, then not really much will change. One thing that I can appreciate about Guetta's visuals are the lack of over emphasized endorsements and ad placement. The song is a cool techno/dance beat and borrows some inspiration from the Daft Punk sound of the Tron sequel.

J.Cole-Sideline Story
J. Cole dropped a new visual for his latest single "Sideline Story" off his debut album. The video is a classic compilation of tour footage and displays the different global stops that J.cole has performed. The visual fits the song well by showing that he is no longer just a sideline rapper touring different college campuses around America. The song isn't exactly a hit and I would expect him to do a visual for "Nobody's Perfect" instead, but Cole is a talented artist and one of the few intelligent new comer rappers to drop some clever and catchy music.

Drake-"Take Care" ft Rihanna

Drake has finally dropped a new visual for his pop/radio friendly track "Take Care" ft Rihanna. The visual is a little confusing, in terms of relating to anything in the song. The two seem to have very little chemistry. Rihanna displays her ability to stare deeply into the camera as it pans in and out, while someone plays with the lights and Drake passionately performs hand gestures in some scenes and awkwardly holds Rihanna in others. At one point it looks like he really is about to cry right on her shoulder and Rihanna just looks a little uninterested. I didn't really get the powdered dancers, mountain scenes, and the random animals. One thing that I can appreciate about this video are the great shots that would make National Geographic proud.

Drake-"HYFR" ft lil Wayne
Jews can go hard too and Barmitvah's are even more fun when you are not 13. Drake also dropped a visual for his hit "HYFR" earlier this month and takes pride in his Jewish half by showing how it really goes down in a synagogue party. This is another take on the same generic rap concert of partying with hot girls and flaunting money while your goons look hard in shades, but for some reason the ignorance in this video is just funny and care-free. I like the fact that Drake embraces his Jewish heritage and the old folks partying harder than a alcoholic going through relapse but really what else can you put as a visual for this street anthem.

RIP-rita ora and Tinie Tempah
The Albanian songstress is back with a new visual for her single "R.I.P." and recruits the help of Tinie Tempah on this rock/pop track. With a voice like a soulful Katy Perry and style like Rihanna, Rita Ora seems to be Jay-Z's way onto the pop charts and larger demographic. The video is very simple with Rita showing that she has changed-from what? I couldn't tell you. The car in the floor is pretty cool but other than that the video isn't really that impressive. Her style is a little too close to Rihanna's latest reinvention for her Talk that Talk, so I am not sure whether this is intentional or just a coincidence. I actually like Rita though, just wish she had more of a specific look about her that separates her from the Rihanna stans complaining or comparing the two.

Steve Aoki ft Kid Cud and Travis Barker- Cudi the Kid
With some pretty interesting visuals and thought provoking concept, Steve Aoki's "Cudi the Kid" definitely delivers as one of the most creative and different videos of the year. One thing that is a little disappointing about this video is no Kid Cudi cameo but, with all the elements, you will barely have time to just think "hey where is Cudi?" One thing about techno/dance songs is that there videos are always so random but visually appealing. Make sure to check it out...
