The Great Migration: Asher Roth & Busta Rhymes Sign to New Labels
Well as the year winds down we all can feel a little pressure from those previous New Years resolutions creeping in. Let's face it: whether you're superstitious or not, everybody wants to start the new year off right. So, more to that point, we have two artists, Busta Rhymes and Asher Roth, finding their way to new beginnings in the music industry.
In a surprising move, Busta Rhymes announced on November 16, 2011 that he will be the newest member of Young Money Cash Money Billionaire Records (YMCMB) along with new member rapper Mystikal. This move puts Busta alongside the likes of rappers Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Lil Wayne and others as new team members in growing and powerful force in music entertainment. Why such a surprising move? Let me put it this way: it's like a grandson signing his grandfather to help run his lemonade stand. Yes, he may be a rap veteran, but the question is who is helping who? Does Busta really need help from such a young label? On the flipside, this could be breathe new life into Busta's career with more exposure and give the opportunity for YMCMB's artists to learn from a rap legend. We shall see what this new partnership brings. Busta is set to have a new album release next year titled E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event) 2: End of the World and has already dropped a single under the YMCMB label called 'Why Stop Now,' featuring Chris Brown.
In other news, Asher Roth finds his way to a new home with label Def Jam Records. It's been more than 3 years since Roth dropped his first album Asleep in the Bread Isle and this is looking like a promising new start for the 26-year-old emcee. Roth has kept busy since that time, dropping two decent mixtapes; the first with producer and VA native Nottz called 'Rawth' (2010) and the second offering called 'Seared Fois Gras With Quince And Cranberry' with DJ Wreckineyez (2010). In the meantime, Roth will still be touring and promoting his newest album called Pabst & Jazz Session which is due out on December 20th of this year. Roth is slated for a new album release (already) in March of 2012.
