Up Jumps the Boogie
Songs that inspire are always easy to place in the timeline of your life. Back in the late 90s, not long ago when I was just a youngin, I used to go visit my Dad out in Virginia where he lived at the time. Between myself and my brother there was always one major pastime we both shared: making mixtapes from radio play. I remember one summer of '97 that we were listening to the radio and a song came on the radio that almost made me loose my mind: Timbaland and Magoo's 'Up Jumps the Boogie,' featuring the beautiful and talented R&B artist Aaliyah (rest in peace). Now you know how the radio thing goes: you turn the radio on mid-song, not only do you not know who the song is by but you also have to wait to get a full recording of the song on your tape deck (yes, we still had tapes back then lol). So yes people: I waited all daaaay looong to hear the rest of that song. Something was special about this song. It had a unique drum track and a tempo I had never heard before. I knew it was a hit and the best part was that it was a regional song. It hadn't even made its way up north yet. I felt like I had a piece of gold when I got that recording of the song to bring back home to share with my friends. That song would go on to be a major hit to launch the careers of all the Blackground Music Group members, including Timbaland, Magoo, Missy Elliott, and Aaliyah.
In 1997, 'Up Jumps the Boogie' would be the first single to drop from rap artist Timbaland & Magoo's first album, Welcome to Our World. The single would go on to peak at #12 in the Billboard top 100 and #1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles. All, that being said, 'Up Jumps the Boogie' is still a classic track to me and marks an era of the beginnings of the creative genius of super producer Timbaland. Now if I could just find that original mixtape I made...Anyways, Timbaland & Magoo: we salute you.
