Coming Attractions

When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was going to the movies with my family members or friends. In the 90's, the movies were a little bit cheaper and more entertaining then today. Some of the best parts about being at the movies were the coming attractions for upcoming films. This was one of the only times that you could see a preview for a movie several months or even a year before it was going to be released. Nowadays thanks to the beauty of the internet and youtube, watching coming attractions is a mouse click away. So I wanna dedicate this post to the interesting upcoming films set to hit theaters later this year and next.

Spider-man

Forgetting about the epic fail that was the Spider-Man 3, Sony is re-vamping the series with an all new cast, story, and villain. Although this movie has already been mentioned in a previous post, there is a new trailer that reveals more of the story and, *drum rolls*, what the Lizard will look like. After watching this, I still feel the same way I did before; the action and special effects look pretty decent but the re-vamping of the whole series is coming too soon and the Lizard as a villain just doesnt seem that appealing. I will hold off full judgement of themovie until it is release later this July.
Prometheus

Ridley Scott is back and aims to take his viewers into space with his new sci-fi thriller, Promotheus. I am still unclear as to whether this is a prequel or a re-vamp of the series like 2010's Star Trek. From the previews it seems to follow the same plot line of an alien invasion/space thriller; a message from space, a crew goes to inspect, and they find out that the message was a trap. From the looks of it, Promotheus seems to be entertaining and Ridley Scott are usually suspenseful so I will give it the benefit of the doubt.

Snow White and the Huntsman

My earlier prediction of the this movie's box office take in might have been slightly wrong. After watching this new trailer and seeing that this movie is scheduled for an early summer release (june 1st), I am pretty sure that it will out do Mirror, Mirror in revenue. With amazing special effects, A-list actors, and a simple plot that gives way to many action scenes and fairytale appeal, Snow Whte and the Huntsmen will probably prove to be another B rate movie with a large take in. Kristen Stweart seems to have latched onto another fantasy movie that is sure to keep her pockets fat and her teen fans happy.

FrankenWeenie
Like flushing down that one goldfish that died too soon or burying that child hood pet taken away from you abruptly, someone can relate to the sad feeling of losing an animal in the family. In Tim Burton's new black and white 3D stop action film Frankenweenie, a boy loses his pet dog and takes a Frankenstein approach to bringing him back from the dead. From the looks of it, this movie seems more comedic and kid friendly than his other works but still has elements of the occult that Tim Burton is known for. Although none of his animated movies have yet to live up to or out do his classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, the stop action and comedy of this film seems to be interesting.

total recall

In this edition of remakes, the action cult-classic movie Total Recall gets a revamp with Colin Farrell playing the iconic role Arnold coined in the 90's original. Unlike its predecessor, this movie takes place on a futuristic Earth with two nations (EuroAmerica and New Shanghai) competing for domination. The protagonist (Farrell) is placed in the middle of this war when he becomes confused on if he is a spy and which for which nation. From the trailer, this remake has all the action elements that made the original great (special effects, cat fights, car chases, etc.) but comes across as a convuluted re-telling of the amnesia plagued assassin/spy that still knows how to fight. I would give this movie a chance but doubt that it has the same appeal or magic that the first one had. Set for release later this summer, August 3rd.

the host

Stephenie Moyer, author of Twilight, is taking full advantage of her young adult appeal and a new trailer for her book-turned movie The Host has recently been released. I have not read any of her books, including the soap-opera Mormon propaganda series Twilight, but her latest bestseller steps away from the vampire world and into the sci-fi. In this teaser trailer, an alien race is fleeing a dying planet and sees Earth as a new home filled with plenty of resources and minerals to keep them alive-including humans. I am not sure whether this will be another story of forbidden love, but the trailer seems to take notes from previous alien invasion movies of the past like Invasion of the Body snatchers and looks like it could be entertaining. Considering that this movie will not be released till next year, I will hold off my judgement until more information or a better trailer is released.

ted

Like Linus with the blanket, every child has that one item that makes them feel safe and secure when their imagination makes the world seem like a far more dangerous place than it actually is. In Seth McFarlane's first full length feature film, Ted, the leading man (Mark Wahlberg) founds security and a bestfriend in his childhood teddy bear that is alive. From the same mind that brought Family Guy into your home, expect this movie to be filled with adult and slightly offensive crude humor. From the Red band trailer, I can guarentee that this not a kids movie but still will be hilarious.

looper
In Rian Johnson's time-traveling sci-fi time thriller, Looper, a group of assassin's for the mob are hired to eliminate targets sent to them from the future. The leading character (Joseph-Gordon Levitt) sets out to discover a conspiracy and save his life when one of the targets turns out to be his future self (played by Bruce Willis). The concept seems very original and very action packed but does not go over the top with special effects. From the trailer, I can tell that this will be a good action movie and reminds me of a mix of Quantum Leap and Jumper. Set to release later this year.
