In the mid to late 90's the neo-soul/R&B sound in music was very heavy with acts such as Maxwell, Erykah Badu, and later Jill Scott in the early 2000's. Over the years, like most genres of music, it later phased out of main stream and became more underground. Artists such as, Musiq Soulchild and Jaheim popped out in mainstream radio every now and then with classic hits but, for the most part, one would have to search to find new music. Now with the comeback of Maxwell and the critically acclaimed BLACKsummer's Night, music lovers are seeing a steady return to the neo-soul sound of R&B that many grew up and loved. With that being said, I recently came across Eric Roberson.
I had heard some of his work before but never got the chance to listen to a full LP from this New Jersey singer. His latest album, Mister Nice Guy, is a solid and chill effort that brings back the soulful sound R&B has been missing for over a decade. The sound of the album is a mix of more Jazz and slow tempo rhythmic beats, but is a soothing and melodic listen to the ears. I like the album and will continue to follow his work. Definitely worth and listen and even a buy. One of the many problems in mainstream music is the lack of support for creative and talented artists.
