The Art of War

You may be familiar with a rap artist named Talib Kweli: Brooklyn emcee; one half of the group Blackstarr; CEO of Blacksmith Records (via Warner Bros.) and one of the best emcees to ever bless the mic. You may have heard of singer/songwriter Rés: female indie singer from Philadelphia; responsible for the hit single ‘ice age,’ and highly regarded as underground royalty in the neo soul genre. But you may not have known that these two amazing talents decided to link up and create a new band called Idle Warship.  On November 1, 2011, Idle Warship dropped their first official debut album, Habits of the Heart which birthed a new sound for the songstress and BK emcee with rich indie rock melodies and symphonic rhythms.
The album has a very live quality to it, starting us off with a high-energy track such as ‘Enemy,’ and continuing on a journey of mixed sounds with reggae-like rhythms of ‘God Bless my Soul’ and the soft piano notes of ‘Beautiful Bad.’ This album is a complex home of sounds masquerading as a pop record. It is a collection of beats and lyrics to reflect the many complexities of love and the directions that love can take you. And with guest appearances by the likes of Kay Cola, Jean Grae, Chester French, and John Forte there are plenty of reasons for your curiosity to be peaked about this album. The track from this album called ‘Kayta’ is sure to be a hit and probably my favorite track on the album. Overall, it’s a good first attempt at band stardom and a unique sound. I would say a little more polish and time to pump out tracks and this band could be considered one of the greats right up there with bands like the Roots. Consider this review you first warning shot on the bright future of this super group. Check below for links of tour dates, band info, and available mixtape downloads.
